19 Years Old Girl with Cerebral Palsy and Stem Cells

Why I said a 19 years old girl with cerebral palsy gives doctors confidence but not the doctors give the patient confidence? It is because of stem cell treatment is a relatively new treatment for cerebral palsy and other nervous system diseases. Among more than 3000 cerebral palsy cases, patients are under 16 years old. This 19 years old girl is the first case we treated over 16 years old.
On 10th, 2013, a 19 years old girl coming from Switzerland named Lan Lan who is a patient with cerebral palsy was hospitalized in our hospital for stem cell treatment and traditional Chinese medicine rehabilitation. Lan Lan’s parents came together with her sitting on the wheelchair. They come to Dr. An Yihua because of they admire his fame. When Dr. An saw Lan Lan, his heart throbbed because the girl’s condition is not very good comparing with the cases we treated before.
First, her age is a disadvantage. According to our research and clinical application of stem cell treatment, the younger the patient get stem cell treatment, the better treatment result the patient can get. Children under 3 years old is the most important period to develop each ability such as language, intelligence, limb activity, fine motor activity, communication, etc. During this period, stem cells can repair and stimulate each nerve system to recover the functions. However, Lan Lan is 19 years old so that Dr. An Yihua can not make sure of the good treatment result.
Second, Lan Lan’s motor function and language development are far behind the other peers. Her neck has no strength so her head has to lean on his mother’s right arm holding on the wheelchair. In addition, she has week waist strength sagged in the wheelchair so that her parents have to take strength to hold her up and upright her body.
After the check up and consultation, Dr. An Yihua told Lan Lan’s parents that Lan Lan’s treatment result will not be as good as other children with cerebral palsy because of age and serious illness condition. Dr. An told the truth as ask them to think over it. The next day, Lan lan’s parents came to see Dr. An and decide to take stem cell treatment as Lan Lan’s last hope. Lan Lan’s father said: “we are responsible to my daughter because we give birth to her. We are willing to try stem cell treatment even if there is a flash of hope”. At that moment, Dr. An and other doctors are touched. This parents is only one of the parents who has child with cerebral palsy. What Lan lan’s father thought and experienced is the same as other parents. With the increase of children’s age, height and weight, the aggravation of illness condition, it is more and more difficult to take care of the children. What’s more, parents can’t take care of the children whole life. What is the best for the children with cerebral palsy is to live independently.
It is gratifying that Lan Lan achieved unexpected treatment result after one time stem cell injection. Her head can well straight up for 10 minutes at least. After the second stem cell injection, her lumbar is full of strength and can sit on the wheelchair straightly. According to the follow up to cases we treated, stem cells can take effects in human body for 6-12 months so that patients can show continuously improvements.
