| What Will Happen to Patients with Spastic Cerebral Palsy |
Spastic cerebral palsy is the most common type, accounting for 70 to 80 percent of all cases of cerebral palsy in the United States. This type of cerebral palsy occurs when brain damage affects the cerebral cortex, or the outer layer of the brain, either at birth or a very young age. The typical characteristic of spastic cerebral palsy is high muscle tone or muscle tension which cause motor dysfunction in different degrees.
According to the areas of the body affected by brain tissue damage, spastic cerebral palsy is classified into several sub-types:
Hemiplegia indicates one side of the body affected by brain damage.
Diplegia indicates lower limbs showing dysfunctions affected by brain damage.
Spastic monoplegia is one single limb being affected because of brain tissue damage.
Spastic triplegia is three limbs being affected.
Spastic quadriplegia is all four limbs more or less equally affected, which is more serious than the above types of spastic cerebral palsy.
According to the severity of children’s condition, spastic cerebral palsy is classified into three stages:
Mild stage spastic cerebral palsy usually affects some of children to finish specific tasks. Most of children can take care of their daily matters without the 24hours care by parents or family members.
Moderate stage spastic cerebral palsy may impede more ability to complete more tasks. Children usually need 1-2 people take care and guarantee the safety. A simple example here, because of high muscle tension in hands, child can not take meals and take care of urinary and bowel by themselves. If the child has intelligence problem, he may not distinguish and avoid some dangerous situation. Therefore, 24hs care is necessary.
Severe stage spastic cerebral palsy usually indicates children totally loss self-care ability and even lie on bed all the time. Such children and the family all have to suffer physical and psychological pain as well as economic burden. According to the statistics, a patient with cerebral palsy can take at least 900,000 USD including direct cost such as medication, rehabilitation, tests and hospitalization etc.; indirect cost such as 1-3 nursing workers, charge for loss of working time of family members etc. Stem cell treatment for cerebral palsy is the latest effective treatment method, which can improve both patient and family’s living quality.
